Residence for citizens of the European Union

Citizens of European Union countries who intend to stay or take up residence in Spain for more than three months are obliged to apply for a registration certificate or a residence card for a family member of a European Union citizen. They must present it at the Foreigners' Office in the province where they wish to stay or take up residence.

For whom

  • To a spouse not legally or de facto separated from the other spouse
  • To the partner, with whom he/she is in a union analogous to a marital union, registered in a public register.
  • To their direct descendants and those of their spouse or registered partner, who are under 21 years of age or over 21 years of age and living with them, or who are incapable.
  • Your direct relatives in the ascending line and those of your spouse or registered partner who are dependent on you.

How and where
The registration certificate or a residence card of a family member of a Union citizen must be presented to the Aliens Office in the province where you wish to stay or take up residence.

Residence card

If you go to the website of the Comisaría General de Extranjería you will find the information necessary to process the application for the residence card that will serve to accredit your residency status.

To apply you will need to submit the following documentation:

  • Passport or valid document for entry into Spain.
  • Proof of previous legal and continuous residence in Spain.
  • 3 recent passport-size photographs.
